Useful Engine is the twelfth and final episode of Dodger the Coal Mines Engine.
Dodger enjoyed working at Vicarstown Coal Mines, and the workmen, miners, and Manager had all gotten a soft side for their beloved 'Submarine'.
He was rough, tough, and almost indestructable.
No ammount of trucks was too hard for him, tough, he often had trouble with his maxium capacity.
One day, he puffed into Crovan's Gate's Steamworks to have a rest when Victor saw him.
"Dodger! What has happened to you, my friend?"
"Oh, just a couple clouds of coal on me, no problem," he replied.
"Are you sure you don't want a wash down and a polish?"
"More than sure. I don't need to be clean to be really useful."
Dodger puffed down the line, and arrived at Killdane.
The stationmaster came up, "We need your help. The Diesel has broken down and we need someone to take the train to Peel Gordred."
"What about my coal train?" asked Dodger.
"I'll inform the Fat Controller about the current situation, and tell him that you'll be a tad delayed. Now hurry, shunt you train into that siding, and take the train. Henry will come and take him to the Dieselworks."
Dodger wasted no time in doing so, and pulling hard managed to start a train an engine twice his size could pull.
Dodger took on coal and water before heading off to Tidmouth.
At Maron, he found a Guard waving a red flag.
"There must be danger," thought Dodger, and slowed to a stop.
"Silly Gordon has stalled on the hill. Could you help us please?"
Dodger was surprised to find out that instead of nice shining coaches, it was ten dirty trucks.
"Well, well, well!" chortled Dodger, "what do we have here?"
"Shut up, and just help me up the hill," Gordon grumbled.
He did not enjoy being teased by him, as he had previously taken pride of being the only engine from Doncaster.
Dodger soon had him up the hill and running. He collected his train and was on his way.
He had to help Thomas to Tidmouth as well.
The Fat Controller was very pleased.
"I'm proud of you Dodger. You indeed have been a Really Useful Engine today."
"Thank you, Sir. But, I don't need to be clean to be Really Useful."
And with that said, the engines couldn't disagree.
