Plot
Before reaching Peel Godred, the Small engines would have to pass Kirk Machan. Just before arriving at Kirk Machan, Rex spotted a strange, queer engine on the station platform.
"Who's that?" Rex asked his Driver.
"He's Culdee the Mountain Engine from the Culdee Fell Mountain Railway," his Driver replied.
"A mountain railway!" Rex laughed. "That's impossible!" He felt so clever.
"Hullo," he tooted. "I'm Rex. Who are you?"
"I'm Culdee, me and my friends climb the mountains on this railway."
Rex was at a lost for words.
"You really do climb mountains?"
"Yes."
"How?"
"We have this wheel that fits into a rack on our rails. We can't slip whatever the weather."
Rex was impressed.
"Well, do you like passengers?"
"It's pretty much the only traffic we have. When we operate."
"Well, you're getting lots."
"Thanks. I'm afriad to say we don't operate during December and March. Due to winter."
"Ah! Well, when you do, you'll be getting tons."
"That means we'll be bringing you lots too. For people who want to see the . . . uh . . ."
"Small Railway," Rex finished.
"Yes, thank you."
"People used to think engines couldn't climb mountains."
"And they used to think 'toy' engines couldn't operate a railway."
"I guess we have lots of similiarities," realized Culdee.
"Yes, indeed."
They stood silent for a moment.
"Who's that fellow, Culdee," said another engine.
"Rex, he and his friends'll be bringing us passengers quite soon."
"Glad to hear that."
"There are more?"
"Why, yes of course. Seven of us, actually."
"Well, I have to go now. See you soon. I promise we'll bring you lots of passengers."
"Thanks! Good bye!"
And Rex set on his way to Peel Godred.
