|Percy's Important Job|
|Season 12, Episode 5|
|Air date||May 3rd, 2013|
Vicarstown Coal Mines is one of the most roughest places for steam engines to work. It is rough, tough work with trucks in a coally surface.
Granted, Percy had that expirence through 1948 and 1950.
But when the Fat Controller brought Dodger, he has suited the job much better. His weight could be supported by weak ballast, but he was also capeable of taking at least fifteen trucks at a time.
He didn't mind trucks, and he knew many tricks to stop their tricks. And though he would start a day shiny and spotless, he would end the day covered in coal dust, which he didn't mind at all.
And because he brought coal, the engines respected him.
Throughout the 1960s, visiting engines were common.
One of these visited Vicarstown Coal Mines. She would take a coal train to Crovan's Gate.
"Hullo," she said to Dodger.
"Welcome, I'm almost done with shunting your train. Lemme just dealt with these trucks," he replied, "now," he whispered, "those trucks have their brakes, so I will force them to take them off."
"Are you sure about that?"
He charged them, but instead of getting a rebound, everything turned black....
"Wake up, already," David said, "you must've had a big crash."
"Oh, stupid trucks. I think I'll just return to the Mines now," he replied, but found he couldn't move.
"Your not going anywhere for two weeks," said, none other than the Fat Controller, "but I guess I can't blame it all on you. Seems like the trucks got the better of you."
"Forgot to think if the trucks would be thinking to release their brakes, Sir. I'm sorry."
"That's alright. The past is past. But, we will need another engine to work at the Mines whilst your bufferbeam and chimney are replaced. They take time. Least two weeks was what Russell told me."
He drove away thoughtfully.
Percy arrived crossly at Knapford at about 8 o clock in the night.
The Fat Controller had stopped for daily check up.
"Hullo, Percy. You look frustrated."
"I am. Thomas kindly let me take this train, but now in the summer, there hasn't been many goods, so I've mostly been bored. And since I'm not 'up to date' on the Main Line news, I've nothing to talk to about to Toby or Daisy."
"Well, if you are bored. I think the Coal Mines would be a nice change. I know your first expirence there wasn't the best, but it has elements of surprise."
"Well, I guess so. Besides, then I'll earn respect. Dodger does. And I can choose to stay at Tidmouth, Ffarquhar, or Vicarstown."
"Very well. You can start tomorrow."
