Plot

Skarloey is the oldest engine of the railway that he was named after, the 'Skarloey Railway', he is a wise and kind engine who has the number 1 painted on his bunkers. He loves seeing the sights, he thinks they're so beautiful. His name meant "Lake in the Woods" in Sudric language. Skarloey tries to show all the engines on the narrow gauge railway that he can be a really useful engine.

One morning, Skarloey woken up from his shed. "*yawns* Morning Rusty." said Skarloey "Morning Skarloey." said Rusty "Did you have a nice sleep?" he asked "Yes, indeed." said Skarloey. "There is a lot of work that has to be done today." said Rusty "Yes, I know." said Skarloey. Then Duke woken up "Morning you two." he said "Morning Duke." said the two engines. "There's a busy day ahead." said Duke "I know." said Skarloey "Like always." Sir Handel woken up, but not in a very good mood "Huh! It's morning." he said "That means I have lots of work to do." he complained. Skarloey rolled his eyes. "Sir Handel!" he exclaimed "You have to do the work you're given or the Thin Controller will be cross." "Yes, I know!" said Sir Handel "And I want to stay in my shed." Duke grew an unusual grin and rolled his eyes. "*sighs* Youngsters!" said Duke "I know." said Skarloey. "They can be a bit annoying sometimes." said Rusty. Then Skarloey's driver and fireman arrived. "Come on Skarloey," said his driver "We have work to do." "Right away driver!" said Skarloey and he puffed away.

Skarloey picked up his coaches from the carriage shed and puffed away. Skarloey puffed happily through the countryside. The sun was shining and the passengers would always get out of the coaches to look at the pretty view. "What a beautiful countryside." said Skarloey to himself. After Skarloey had finished his passenger run, the Thin Controller had sent him to work up at the Blue Mountain Quarry. Skarloey arrived and seen a lot of trucks that needed shunting. Skarloey blew his whistle to the other engines "Okay everyone." he called "Let's get to work." Sir Handel scoffed. "Do I have to?" he asked lazily "Yes of course you do Sir Handel." said Skarloey. Sir Handel sighed "Fine!" so Sir Handel got to work. Skarloey and the other engines worked hard all day. Paxton arrived to take stone to the docks "There you go Paxton." said Skarloey. "Thanks Skarloey." said Paxton and he oiled away. Skarloey was very pleased to be the leader of the little engines.

After work at the Blue Mountain Quarry had been done, Skarloey went back to the sheds for a rest, when he backed into the shed, he saw Rheneas, Rheneas was Skarloey's brother and they were both the oldest engines of the Thin Controller's railway. "Hello Skarloey." said Rheneas "Hello Rheneas." said Skarloey "It's been a very busy day, hasn't it?" "Yes, indeed!" said Skarloey "I was thinking that one day I should have an overhaul." "Why?" asked Rheneas "Well, because of all the work I've done." said Skarloey "I've done so many work, I feel like I need a little rest from doing it." said Skarloey, "Yes..." said Rheneas "But you're the oldest engine of the railway that you were named after." "I know." said Skarloey "But the Thin Controller might let me go on an overhaul after I do more work." said the little old engine "Well, if you say so." said Rheneas and he puffed out of the shed to do work. Skarloey stayed so he could have more rest so he could do his work later that day.

Later, Skarloey arrived at the yards to take some workmen to a damaged tunnel near Rheneas station, soon he was coupled up and he puffed away to the tunnel. Skarloey puffed to Rheneas Tunnel, but before Rheneas Tunnel, there was a steep hill that the engine needed to cross so they could get to the tunnel, Skarloey knew he wouldn't be able to go over the hill with the workmen. So wheel turn by wheel turn, Skarloey started to move up the hill "I can do it! I can do it!" puffed Skarloey to himself. Skarloey puffed and panted up the hill "I can't let the workmen down." panted Skarloey, but as Skarloey was nearly at the top of the hill "*pants* I'm nearly at *pants* the top *pants* of *pants* the hill *pants!" he panted. Trouble began, Skarloey stopped moving and as he tried to continue moving, his wheels started moving backwards and Skarloey rolled back down the hill again. Skarloey was sad "Oh!" he sighed sadly "How can't I get over the hill?" he thought "I've got over this hill before with these two trucks and the brakevan." "We'll probably have to inspect you all over." said his driver, Skarloey was really unhappy.

Meanwhile, Rusty was on bridge duty, he was making sure that all the bridges on the Skarloey Railway were safe, but as he was approaching Skarloey Bridge, a workman was standing near the bridge "Rusty." said the workman "You must help Skarloey, he's stuck on the hill." Rusty heard the workman "Yes! I would definitely want to help a friend." said Rusty and he rolled away.

Meanwhile back at the hill, Skarloey's crew were inspecting Skarloey because he couldn't get over the hill. "Any damage?" asked Skarloey "Not really any damage Skarloey." said his driver "Why don't you re-check?" thought Skarloey "Well, I've checked all over you and I can't see what is actually wrong with you." said the fireman. "We'll have to wait until we can get back to the engine sheds." said his driver. Then they heard a horn, it was Rusty "Rusty!" said Skarloey "How I'm glad to see you." "Well!" said Rusty "I only came to help because you were struggling to get over the hill." "Yes!" said Skarloey "I need help. I've been over this hill before and I was able to go over it." "Maybe there's something wrong with you." said Rusty. "My driver and fireman said that..." said Skarloey "But there was nothing wrong with me." "Well, anyway, we can't stand around here all day, let's start pushing." said Rusty, so he pushed and pushed Skarloey, but as Rusty and Skarloey were nearly at the top, they stopped and rolled down the hill again. "Hey, but how?" thought Rusty "I don't know." said Skarloey "Even two engines still can't do it." "Maybe we should call for another engine." said his driver "Good idea." said Rusty "So Rusty's driver called the yard manager.

Meanwhile, Sir Handel was shunting trucks and coaches at the depot when the yard manager came to talk to him. "You must help Skarloey and Rusty." he said "Oh! Do I have to do?" asked Sir Handel "Yes, you have do." said the yard manager. "*sigh* Fine!" sighed Sir Handel and he puffed away.

Sir Handel arrived at the hill and saw Skarloey and Rusty both stood at the bottom. "Alright then..." said Sir Handel "Let's start moving." "Okay..." said Rusty on the count of three. 1... 2... 3...!" the two engines started pushing Skarloey up the hill, Skarloey himself also moved so he could get up. Skarloey, Sir Handel and Rusty were puffing with all their might to get up the hill. "I... can... do it!" shouted Skarloey. "Don't give up!" said Rusty "I can't take this any longer!" complained Sir Handel. At last, Skarloey was up the hill "Thank you Sir Handel and Rusty." said Skarloey as he puffed down the other side. Rusty was glad that Skarloey was over the hill, but Sir Handel felt a little sad for being grumpy all day. Skarloey had brought the workmen to the tunnel just in time.

After Skarloey had brought the workmen to the tunnel, Rusty and Sir Handel helped him back to the sheds. Then they puffed into the sheds with Skarloey. "Well done Skarloey!" said Rusty "You tried to show that you're a really useful engine." "Thank you Rusty." said Skarloey. "I couldn't have done it without you." Sir Handel was sad and he decided to apologize. "I'm sorry Skarloey." he said "I shouldn't had been so grumpy today." "It's alright." said Skarloey "At least you helped me over the hill." Skarloey's driver then came up to speak to his engine. "Skarloey, I've found out what's wrong with you!" "What is it driver?" asked Skarloey. "Your valve gear has snapped." he explained. "Oh, that is bad!" said Skarloey. Then the Thin Controller arrived, he came to talk to Skarloey "Skarloey, I am very proud of you. You tried your best to get over the hill and you were able to do so." "Thank you sir!" said Skarloey "And because of all the hard work you have been doing over the years, I am giving you an overhaul" Skarloey gasped and smiled from buffer to buffer "Th-Th-Thank you sir" he said happily. "And now you can take a little break from working and also, you can have your valve gear mended." said the Thin Controller and he walked away.

Skarloey was very happy to be going an overhaul, not just that, but he was also proud to be the leader of the Skarloey Railway.
