One morning, Skarloey woken up from his shed. He yawned as he looked up at the wonderful morning sky.
One morning, Skarloey woken up from his shed. "*yawns* Morning Rusty." said Skarloey "Morning Skarloey." said Rusty "Did you have a nice sleep?" he asked "Yes, indeed." said Skarloey. "There is a lot of work that has to be done today." said Rusty "Yes, I know." said Skarloey. Then Duke woken up "Morning you two." he said "Morning Duke." said the two engines. "There's a busy day ahead." said Duke "I know." said Skarloey "Like always." Sir Handel woken up, but not in a very good mood "Huh! It's morning." he said "That means I have lots of work to do." he complained. Skarloey rolled his eyes. "Sir Handel!" he exclaimed "You have to do the work you're given or the Thin Controller will be cross." "Yes, I know!" said Sir Handel "And I want to stay in my shed." Duke grew an unusual grin and rolled his eyes. "*sighs* Youngsters!" said Duke "I know." said Skarloey. "They can be a bit annoying sometimes." said Rusty. Then Skarloey's driver and fireman arrived. "Come on Skarloey," said his driver "We have work to do." "Right away driver!" said Skarloey and he puffed away.

  +
"Good morning, Rusty." said Skarloey.
Skarloey picked up his coaches from the carriage shed and puffed away. Skarloey puffed happily through the countryside. The sun was shining and the passengers would always get out of the coaches to look at the pretty view. "What a beautiful countryside." said Skarloey to himself. After Skarloey had finished his passenger run, the Thin Controller had sent him to work up at the Blue Mountain Quarry. Skarloey arrived and seen a lot of trucks that needed shunting. Skarloey blew his whistle to the other engines "Okay everyone." he called "Let's get to work." Sir Handel scoffed. "Do I have to?" he asked lazily "Yes of course you do Sir Handel." said Skarloey. Sir Handel sighed "Fine!" so Sir Handel got to work. Skarloey and the other engines worked hard all day. Paxton arrived to take stone to the docks "There you go Paxton." said Skarloey. "Thanks Skarloey." said Paxton and he oiled away. Skarloey was very pleased to be the leader of the little engines.

  +
"Good morning, Skarloey." Rusty replied. "Busy day, eh?
After work at the Blue Mountain Quarry had been done, Skarloey went back to the sheds for a rest, when he backed into the shed, he saw Rheneas, Rheneas was Skarloey's brother and they were both the oldest engines of the Thin Controller's railway. "Hello Skarloey." said Rheneas "Hello Rheneas." said Skarloey "It's been a very busy day, hasn't it?" "Yes, indeed!" said Skarloey "I was thinking that one day I should have an overhaul." "Why?" asked Rheneas "Well, because of all the work I've done." said Skarloey "I've done so many work, I feel like I need a little rest from doing it." said Skarloey, "Yes..." said Rheneas "But you're the oldest engine of the railway that you were named after." "I know." said Skarloey "But the Thin Controller might let me go on an overhaul after I do more work." said the little old engine "Well, if you say so." said Rheneas and he puffed out of the shed to do work. Skarloey stayed so he could have more rest so he could do his work later that day.

  +
"Yes, of course, like always." puffed Skarloey. Then Duke woken up.
Later, Skarloey arrived at the yards to take some workmen to a damaged tunnel near Rheneas station, soon he was coupled up and he puffed away to the tunnel. Skarloey puffed to Rheneas Tunnel, but before Rheneas Tunnel, there was a steep hill that the engine needed to cross so they could get to the tunnel, Skarloey knew he wouldn't be able to go over the hill with the workmen. So wheel turn by wheel turn, Skarloey started to move up the hill "I can do it! I can do it!" puffed Skarloey to himself. Skarloey puffed and panted up the hill "I can't let the workmen down." panted Skarloey, but as Skarloey was nearly at the top of the hill "*pants* I'm nearly at *pants* the top *pants* of *pants* the hill *pants!" he panted. Trouble began, Skarloey stopped moving and as he tried to continue moving, his wheels started moving backwards and Skarloey rolled back down the hill again. Skarloey was sad "Oh!" he sighed sadly "How can't I get over the hill?" he thought "I've got over this hill before with these two trucks and the brakevan." "We'll probably have to inspect you all over." said his driver, Skarloey was really unhappy.

  +
"Morning you two." he said.
Meanwhile, Rusty was on bridge duty, he was making sure that all the bridges on the Skarloey Railway were safe, but as he was approaching Skarloey Bridge, a workman was standing near the bridge "Rusty." said the workman "You must help Skarloey, he's stuck on the hill." Rusty heard the workman "Yes! I would definitely want to help a friend." said Rusty and he rolled away.

  +
"Good morning, Duke." the two engines replied.
Meanwhile back at the hill, Skarloey's crew were inspecting Skarloey because he couldn't get over the hill. "Any damage?" asked Skarloey "Not really any damage Skarloey." said his driver "Why don't you re-check?" thought Skarloey "Well, I've checked all over you and I can't see what is actually wrong with you." said the fireman. "We'll have to wait until we can get back to the engine sheds." said his driver. Then they heard a horn, it was Rusty "Rusty!" said Skarloey "How I'm glad to see you." "Well!" said Rusty "I only came to help because you were struggling to get over the hill." "Yes!" said Skarloey "I need help. I've been over this hill before and I was able to go over it." "Maybe there's something wrong with you." said Rusty. "My driver and fireman said that..." said Skarloey "But there was nothing wrong with me." "Well, anyway, we can't stand around here all day, let's start pushing." said Rusty, so he pushed and pushed Skarloey, but as Rusty and Skarloey were nearly at the top, they stopped and rolled down the hill again. "Hey, but how?" thought Rusty "I don't know." said Skarloey "Even two engines still can't do it." "Maybe we should call for another engine." said his driver "Good idea." said Rusty "So Rusty's driver called the yard manager.

  +
"Yet another busy day on the railway." Duke said, meekly.
Meanwhile, Sir Handel was shunting trucks and coaches at the depot when the yard manager came to talk to him. "You must help Skarloey and Rusty." he said "Oh! Do I have to do?" asked Sir Handel "Yes, you have do." said the yard manager. "*sigh* Fine!" sighed Sir Handel and he puffed away.

  +
"I know," said Skarloey, "But don't forget this is a busy railway, it's always supposed to be busy."
Sir Handel arrived at the hill and saw Skarloey and Rusty both stood at the bottom. "Alright then..." said Sir Handel "Let's start moving." "Okay..." said Rusty on the count of three. 1... 2... 3...!" the two engines started pushing Skarloey up the hill, Skarloey himself also moved so he could get up. Skarloey, Sir Handel and Rusty were puffing with all their might to get up the hill. "I... can... do it!" shouted Skarloey. "Don't give up!" said Rusty "I can't take this any longer!" complained Sir Handel. At last, Skarloey was up the hill "Thank you Sir Handel and Rusty." said Skarloey as he puffed down the other side. Rusty was glad that Skarloey was over the hill, but Sir Handel felt a little sad for being grumpy all day. Skarloey had brought the workmen to the tunnel just in time.

  +
"Indeed." added Rusty.
After Skarloey had brought the workmen to the tunnel, Rusty and Sir Handel helped him back to the sheds. Then they puffed into the sheds with Skarloey. "Well done Skarloey!" said Rusty "You tried to show that you're a really useful engine." "Thank you Rusty." said Skarloey. "I couldn't have done it without you." Sir Handel was sad and he decided to apologize. "I'm sorry Skarloey." he said "I shouldn't had been so grumpy today." "It's alright." said Skarloey "At least you helped me over the hill." Skarloey's driver then came up to speak to his engine. "Skarloey, I've found out what's wrong with you!" "What is it driver?" asked Skarloey. "Your valve gear has snapped." he explained. "Oh, that is bad!" said Skarloey. Then the Thin Controller arrived, he came to talk to Skarloey "Skarloey, I am very proud of you. You tried your best to get over the hill and you were able to do so." "Thank you sir!" said Skarloey "And because of all the hard work you have been doing over the years, I am giving you an overhaul" Skarloey gasped and smiled from buffer to buffer "Th-Th-Thank you sir" he said happily. "And now you can take a little break from working and also, you can have your valve gear mended." said the Thin Controller and he walked away.

  +
Sir Handel had woken up too, but not in a very good mood. "Huh! It's morning." he snorted. "That means I have lots of work to do." he complained.
Skarloey was very happy to be going an overhaul, not just that, but he was also proud to be the leader of the Skarloey Railway.

  +
  +
Skarloey rolled his eyes. "Sir Handel!" he exclaimed, "You have to do the work you're given or the Thin Controller will be cross."
  +
  +
"Yes, I know!" Sir Handel retorted, "And I want to stay in my shed... and that is, that!"
  +
  +
Duke grew an unusual grin and rolled his eyes. "Youngsters." he sighed reluctantly.
  +
  +
"I know," agreed Skarloey.
  +
  +
"They can be a bit annoying sometimes." added Rusty.
  +
  +
Then Skarloey's driver and fireman arrived. "Come on Skarloey," said his driver. "We have work to do."
  +
  +
"Right away, sir." puffed Skarloey as he chuffed out of the sheds.
  +
  +
Skarloey picked up his coaches from the carriage shed and puffed away. Skarloey puffed happily through the countryside. The sun was shining and the passengers would always get out of the coaches to look at the pretty view. "What a beautiful countryside." Skarloey whispered to himself.
  +
  +
After Skarloey had finished his passenger run, the Thin Controller had sent him to work up at the Blue Mountain Quarry. Skarloey arrived and seen a lot of trucks that needed shunting.
  +
Skarloey blew his whistle to the other engines.
  +
  +
"Okay everyone." he called, "Let's get to work." "Yes, of course!" they said as they began working.
  +
  +
"Right you are Skarloey." called Owen.
  +
  +
Sir Handel sighed. "Do I have to?" he asked idly.
  +
  +
"Yes of course you do Sir Handel." said Skarloey, "We must work hard and make the Thin Controller proud... as always!" he added.
  +
  +
Sir Handel sighed. "Fine!" he muttered as he did what he was told.
  +
  +
Skarloey and the other engines worked hard all day. Paxton arrived to take stone to the docks. "There you go Paxton." whistled Skarloey. "The stone needed for your delivery."
  +
  +
"Thanks Skarloey." tooted Paxton and he oiled away. Skarloey was very pleased to be the leader of the little engines.
  +
  +
After work at the Blue Mountain Quarry had been done, Skarloey went back to the sheds for a rest. When he backed into the shed, he saw Rheneas, Rheneas was Skarloey's brother and they were both the oldest engines of the Thin Controller's railway.
  +
  +
"Hello Skarloey." Rheneas tooted.
  +
  +
Skarloey whistled back. "Hello Rheneas." he replied.
  +
  +
"You know," Skarloey said to Rheneas. "All this work is making me feel like I'm too old." he puffed, "And it feels like I'm breaking down. I was thinking that one day I should have an overhaul."
  +
  +
Rheneas was puzzled. "But why though?" he asked.
  +
  +
"Didn't you hear what I just said?" Skarloey retorted.
  +
  +
Rheneas stuttered. "Uh... yes." he puffed. "But, no need to be rude."
  +
  +
"I'm sorry, Rheneas." Skarloey sighed. "But I've done so many work, I feel like I need a little rest from doing it all."
  +
  +
"I know that." said Rheneas, "But you're the oldest engine on this railway, you were named after the railway. Your are deputy leader."
  +
  +
"Of course." remarked Skarloey. "But the Thin Controller might let me go on an overhaul after I do more work." the little old engine said.
  +
  +
"Well, if you say so." Rheneas puffed as he steamed out of the shed to do work. Skarloey stayed so he could have more rest so he could do his work later that day.
  +
  +
Later, Skarloey arrived at the yards to take some workmen to Rheneas Tunnel. Soon he was coupled up and he puffed away to the tunnel.
  +
  +
"Oh, I do hope Duncan's not had another accident." Skarloey thought, hopingly. "But I don't know why I need to take these workmen to the tunnel anyway." But as Skarloey was puffing on his way to Rheneas Tunnel, he saw a steep hill that he needed to cross so they could get to the tunnel, Skarloey was surprised.
  +
  +
"How would I be able to cross over a hill this big?" he thought. "I fail most of the time."
  +
  +
"Well, let's just see how you go on then." his driver suggested.
  +
  +
"Well... alright." Skarloey puffed confidently, but he still knew that he wouldn't be able to go over the hill with the workmen. So wheel turn by wheel turn, Skarloey started to move up the hill, he was feeling determined as he began puffing up.
  +
  +
"I can do it! I can do it!" he puffed determinedly.
  +
  +
Skarloey puffed and panted up the hill. "I can't let the workmen down." Skarloey panted, but as Skarloey was nearly at the top of the hill. Trouble began, Skarloey noticed that he was moving slower and slower.
  +
  +
"What!" he exclaimed. "What's going on?" he all of a sudden, stopped moving. As he tried to continue moving, his wheels started moving backwards and Skarloey rolled back down the hill again.
  +
  +
Skarloey was sad. "Oh!" he sighed sadly, "How can I get over the hill?" he thought. "I've never went over it before."
  +
  +
"We'll have to keep on trying." his driver said, feeling confident inside.
  +
  +
Skarloey was unsure, but he knew his driver was right. So he started to move up again, but he just couldn't make it to the top. Skarloey sighed, "I can't do it." he said sadly.
  +
  +
"I'll go and get help." said the driver.
  +
  +
Meanwhile, Rusty was on bridge duty, he was making sure that all the bridges on the Skarloey Railway were safe, but as he was approaching Skarloey Bridge, a workman was standing near the bridge.
  +
  +
"Rusty." the workman said. "You must help Skarloey, he's stuck on the hill."
  +
  +
Rusty heard the workman. "Yes sir. I would definitely want to help a friend." and Rusty quickly chugged away.
  +
  +
Meanwhile back at the hill, Skarloey's crew had an idea.
  +
  +
"We'll just check on you to see if that's the problem." his driver said.
  +
  +
Soon, his crew were inspecting Skarloey all over.
  +
  +
"Any damage?" asked Skarloey, starting to become a little impatient.
  +
  +
"Not really any damage Skarloey." his driver said.
  +
  +
"Why don't you re-check then?" asked Skarloey.
  +
  +
"Well, I've checked all over you and I can't see what is actually wrong with you." said the fireman. "It can't be because the hill's too steep, you're only pulling two trucks and a brakevan." he said.
  +
  +
"Exactly." Skarloey burst out.
  +
  +
"Let's just wait for help." his driver finally said.
  +
  +
It wasn't long before Rusty came, he tooted his horn when he seen Skarloey. Skarloey was happy to see his friend. "Rusty!" he exclaimed. "How I'm glad to see you."
  +
  +
"I only came to help because you were struggling to get over the hill." Rusty chuckled.
  +
  +
Skarloey also chuckled, well a little. "Yes, I need help. I can't get over this hill, I'm only pulling two trucks and a van and I'm for some strange reason, unable to get over it." Skarloey explained.
  +
  +
"Is there something wrong with you?" Rusty asked.
  +
  +
"Well, my driver and fireman said that," said Skarloey, "And they checked, but there was nothing."
  +
  +
"I see." said Rusty, "But we can't stand around here all day, let's start pushing." the little diesel called.
  +
  +
"Yes, of course." replied Skarloey. So Rusty began to push Skarloey up the hill, he pushed and pushed with all his might.
  +
  +
Rusty was surprised. "Wow, gosh! You way a tonne!" he remarked.
  +
  +
"Not really!" Skarloey replied, but as Rusty and Skarloey were nearly at the top, they stopped and rolled down the hill again.
  +
  +
"Hey, but how?" asked Rusty.
  +
  +
"I don't know." said Skarloey. "That's the problem."
  +
  +
"Not even two engines have managed to do it." his driver sighed.
  +
  +
"Maybe we should call for another engine." the fireman suggested.
  +
  +
"Good idea, Matt." said Rusty's driver, and he called the yard manager.
  +
  +
Meanwhile, Sir Handel was shunting trucks and coaches at the depot when the yard manager came urgently.
  +
  +
"This is an emergency!" he cried. "You must help Skarloey and Rusty up the hill." he said.
  +
  +
Sir Handel snorted. "Oh! Do I have to do?" he indignantly asked.
  +
  +
"Yes, you have to." said the yard manager.
  +
  +
"Fine!" Sir Handel sighed and he puffed away.
  +
  +
Sir Handel arrived at the hill and saw Skarloey and Rusty both stood at the bottom.
  +
  +
"Huh!" he scoffed, "Two engines can't even get over a very short hill? Typical!" he huffed rudely.
  +
  +
"No need to be rude." retorted Rusty. "Skarloey is getting old, and you should know that you must respect him. Right?"
  +
  +
"Yes, I know." Sir Handel replied. "But can we just get started already? I ain't sitting here all day."
  +
  +
"Then get ready then." Rusty puffed.
  +
  +
So Sir Handel buffered up to Rusty. "Right, let's start pushing." he said swiftly.
  +
  +
"Okay," Rusty remarked. "Don't rush."
  +
  +
So the two engines began pushing Skarloey up the hill, Skarloey himself also tried moving so he could get up, plus not wanting to leave Rusty and Sir Handel exhausted in the process.
  +
  +
"I must get over this hill, will two engines help?" Skarloey wondered.
  +
  +
"Of course... well maybe." his driver said.
  +
  +
Skarloey, Sir Handel and Rusty were puffing with all their might up the hill.
  +
  +
"I... can... do it!" shouted Skarloey.
  +
  +
"Don't give up!" shouted Rusty.
  +
  +
Sir Handel was already tiring out. "I can't take this any longer!" he wheeshed.
  +
  +
At last, Skarloey was up the hill. "Thank you Sir Handel and Rusty." Skarloey puffed as he raced down the other side.
  +
  +
Rusty was glad that Skarloey was over the hill. "You welcome." he replied.
  +
  +
Suddenly, there was a loud crack! Skarloey's valve gear had burst. Skarloey had tried getting up the hill by using the only strength he had, but it turns out that the mystery of why he couldn't get up the hill was solved.
  +
  +
"Oh my," Rusty gasped. Even Sir Handel felt sorry for Skarloey, he knew that he had been grumpy the whole time and now his friend was in trouble.
  +
  +
"Uh, Skarloey." he puffed meekly.
  +
  +
"Yes, Sir Handel." Skarloey replied.
  +
  +
"Shall I take these workmen to the tunnel for you?" the little blue engine asked, helpfully.
  +
  +
"Well, that would be honourable of you, Sir Handel." Skarloey wheeshed.
  +
  +
"Okay then, Skarloey." Sir Handel puffed and he took the workmen to the tunnel.
  +
  +
Rusty helped Skarloey back to the sheds. Rusty backed Skarloey into his shed, then he turned to change tracks next to him.
  +
  +
"Well done Skarloey!" cheered Rheneas and Rusty. "You tried to show that you're a really useful engine. Even though your valve has snapped." added Rusty.
  +
  +
"Thank you, Rusty." Skarloey replied. "I couldn't have done it without you or Sir Handel."
  +
  +
"But I still don't think you're that bad enough to go on an overhaul." said Rheneas.
  +
  +
Then Sir Handel came back to the sheds, he had delivered the workmen to the tunnel on time.
  +
  +
"There you go, Skarloey." Sir Handel wheeshed. "I've delivered the workmen to the tunnel."
  +
  +
"Oh, thanks Sir Handel." Skarloey said.
  +
  +
Sir Handel felt sad that he had been grumpy all day, now was his time to apologise. "You know, Skarloey." he puffed, "I'm sorry for being so grumpy earlier today." he puffed.
  +
  +
"It's alright." chuffed Skarloey. "At least you helped me over the hill and the workmen are now at their destination."
  +
  +
Then the Thin Controller arrived, he came to talk to Skarloey. "Skarloey, I am very proud of you. You tried your best to get over the hill and you were able to do so."
  +
  +
Skarloey was pleased. "Thank you sir!" he puffed proudly.
  +
  +
The Thin Controller suddenly frowned. "But I also heard that your valve gear had snapped." he said.
  +
  +
"Yes it has sir." Skarloey said.
  +
  +
"And because of all the hard work you have been doing over the years... and because of your valve gear. I am giving you an overhaul" Skarloey's jaw dropped, he gasped from buffer to buffer.
  +
  +
"A-an overhaul?!" he stammered. "W-Why Thank you sir" he wheeshed.
  +
  +
"And now you can take a little break from working and also have your valve gear mended." the Thin Controller added and he walked away.
  +
  +
"I can't believe it." Skarloey gasped. "I'm actually going on an overhaul, I haven't been on one for years."
  +
  +
"Well, you did say about going on an overhaul and here you are." tooted Rusty.
  +
  +
"You'll be gone from the railway for a while." Rheneas added.
  +
  +
"I know," said Skarloey. "I will miss you, but I'm sure there'll be other engines there that I can talk to, which are friendly." he puffed to himself, and everyone agreed.
  +
  +
Skarloey was excited. That day, he was at the yards waiting for a lorry to come and pick him up and take him to the works. All the narrow gauge engines were there, waiting for the upcoming events to take place. Then the lorry arrived. Skarloey beamed with pride, he couldn't wait to be loaded onto the lorry's flatbed. He was soon lifted onto it and the lorry drove away, all of the narrow gauge engines whistled and tooted.
  +
  +
"Bye, Skarloey!" called Peter Sam.
  +
  +
"Have a great time!" whistled Sir Handel.
  +
  +
"And good luck!" added Rusty.
  +
  +
"I'll sure miss you brother." puffed Rheneas.
  +
  +
"I'll miss you two." said Skarloey.
  +
  +
And it wasn't long before Skarloey was gone into the distance. Skarloey was happy to be going on an overhaul, but he was much more happier to be the leader of the Thin Controller's railway.

Plot

Skarloey is the oldest engine of the railway that he was named after, the 'Skarloey Railway', he is a wise and kind engine who has the number 1 painted on his bunkers. He loves seeing the sights, he thinks they're so beautiful. His name meant "Lake in the Woods" in Sudric language. Skarloey tries to show all the engines on the narrow gauge railway that he can be a really useful engine.

One morning, Skarloey woken up from his shed. He yawned as he looked up at the wonderful morning sky.

"Good morning, Rusty." said Skarloey.

"Good morning, Skarloey." Rusty replied. "Busy day, eh?

"Yes, of course, like always." puffed Skarloey. Then Duke woken up.

"Morning you two." he said.

"Good morning, Duke." the two engines replied.

"Yet another busy day on the railway." Duke said, meekly.

"I know," said Skarloey, "But don't forget this is a busy railway, it's always supposed to be busy."

"Indeed." added Rusty.

Sir Handel had woken up too, but not in a very good mood. "Huh! It's morning." he snorted. "That means I have lots of work to do." he complained.

Skarloey rolled his eyes. "Sir Handel!" he exclaimed, "You have to do the work you're given or the Thin Controller will be cross."

"Yes, I know!" Sir Handel retorted, "And I want to stay in my shed... and that is, that!"

Duke grew an unusual grin and rolled his eyes. "Youngsters." he sighed reluctantly.

"I know," agreed Skarloey.

"They can be a bit annoying sometimes." added Rusty.

Then Skarloey's driver and fireman arrived. "Come on Skarloey," said his driver. "We have work to do."

"Right away, sir." puffed Skarloey as he chuffed out of the sheds.

Skarloey picked up his coaches from the carriage shed and puffed away. Skarloey puffed happily through the countryside. The sun was shining and the passengers would always get out of the coaches to look at the pretty view. "What a beautiful countryside." Skarloey whispered to himself.

After Skarloey had finished his passenger run, the Thin Controller had sent him to work up at the Blue Mountain Quarry. Skarloey arrived and seen a lot of trucks that needed shunting. Skarloey blew his whistle to the other engines.

"Okay everyone." he called, "Let's get to work." "Yes, of course!" they said as they began working.

"Right you are Skarloey." called Owen.

Sir Handel sighed. "Do I have to?" he asked idly.

"Yes of course you do Sir Handel." said Skarloey, "We must work hard and make the Thin Controller proud... as always!" he added.

Sir Handel sighed. "Fine!" he muttered as he did what he was told.

Skarloey and the other engines worked hard all day. Paxton arrived to take stone to the docks. "There you go Paxton." whistled Skarloey. "The stone needed for your delivery."

"Thanks Skarloey." tooted Paxton and he oiled away. Skarloey was very pleased to be the leader of the little engines.

After work at the Blue Mountain Quarry had been done, Skarloey went back to the sheds for a rest. When he backed into the shed, he saw Rheneas, Rheneas was Skarloey's brother and they were both the oldest engines of the Thin Controller's railway.

"Hello Skarloey." Rheneas tooted.

Skarloey whistled back. "Hello Rheneas." he replied.

"You know," Skarloey said to Rheneas. "All this work is making me feel like I'm too old." he puffed, "And it feels like I'm breaking down. I was thinking that one day I should have an overhaul."

Rheneas was puzzled. "But why though?" he asked.

"Didn't you hear what I just said?" Skarloey retorted.

Rheneas stuttered. "Uh... yes." he puffed. "But, no need to be rude."

"I'm sorry, Rheneas." Skarloey sighed. "But I've done so many work, I feel like I need a little rest from doing it all."

"I know that." said Rheneas, "But you're the oldest engine on this railway, you were named after the railway. Your are deputy leader."

"Of course." remarked Skarloey. "But the Thin Controller might let me go on an overhaul after I do more work." the little old engine said.

"Well, if you say so." Rheneas puffed as he steamed out of the shed to do work. Skarloey stayed so he could have more rest so he could do his work later that day.

Later, Skarloey arrived at the yards to take some workmen to Rheneas Tunnel. Soon he was coupled up and he puffed away to the tunnel.

"How would I be able to cross over a hill this big?" he thought. "I fail most of the time."

"Well, let's just see how you go on then." his driver suggested.

"Well... alright." Skarloey puffed confidently, but he still knew that he wouldn't be able to go over the hill with the workmen. So wheel turn by wheel turn, Skarloey started to move up the hill, he was feeling determined as he began puffing up.

"I can do it! I can do it!" he puffed determinedly.

Skarloey puffed and panted up the hill. "I can't let the workmen down." Skarloey panted, but as Skarloey was nearly at the top of the hill. Trouble began, Skarloey noticed that he was moving slower and slower.

"What!" he exclaimed. "What's going on?" he all of a sudden, stopped moving. As he tried to continue moving, his wheels started moving backwards and Skarloey rolled back down the hill again.

Skarloey was sad. "Oh!" he sighed sadly, "How can I get over the hill?" he thought. "I've never went over it before."

"We'll have to keep on trying." his driver said, feeling confident inside.

Skarloey was unsure, but he knew his driver was right. So he started to move up again, but he just couldn't make it to the top. Skarloey sighed, "I can't do it." he said sadly.

"I'll go and get help." said the driver.

Meanwhile, Rusty was on bridge duty, he was making sure that all the bridges on the Skarloey Railway were safe, but as he was approaching Skarloey Bridge, a workman was standing near the bridge.

"Rusty." the workman said. "You must help Skarloey, he's stuck on the hill."

Rusty heard the workman. "Yes sir. I would definitely want to help a friend." and Rusty quickly chugged away.

Meanwhile back at the hill, Skarloey's crew had an idea.

"We'll just check on you to see if that's the problem." his driver said.

Soon, his crew were inspecting Skarloey all over.

"Any damage?" asked Skarloey, starting to become a little impatient.

"Not really any damage Skarloey." his driver said.

"Why don't you re-check then?" asked Skarloey.

"Well, I've checked all over you and I can't see what is actually wrong with you." said the fireman. "It can't be because the hill's too steep, you're only pulling two trucks and a brakevan." he said.

"Exactly." Skarloey burst out.

"Let's just wait for help." his driver finally said.

It wasn't long before Rusty came, he tooted his horn when he seen Skarloey. Skarloey was happy to see his friend. "Rusty!" he exclaimed. "How I'm glad to see you."

"I only came to help because you were struggling to get over the hill." Rusty chuckled.

Skarloey also chuckled, well a little. "Yes, I need help. I can't get over this hill, I'm only pulling two trucks and a van and I'm for some strange reason, unable to get over it." Skarloey explained.

"Is there something wrong with you?" Rusty asked.

"Well, my driver and fireman said that," said Skarloey, "And they checked, but there was nothing."

"I see." said Rusty, "But we can't stand around here all day, let's start pushing." the little diesel called.

"Yes, of course." replied Skarloey. So Rusty began to push Skarloey up the hill, he pushed and pushed with all his might.

Rusty was surprised. "Wow, gosh! You way a tonne!" he remarked.

"Not really!" Skarloey replied, but as Rusty and Skarloey were nearly at the top, they stopped and rolled down the hill again.

"Hey, but how?" asked Rusty.

"I don't know." said Skarloey. "That's the problem."

"Not even two engines have managed to do it." his driver sighed.

"Maybe we should call for another engine." the fireman suggested.

"Good idea, Matt." said Rusty's driver, and he called the yard manager.

Meanwhile, Sir Handel was shunting trucks and coaches at the depot when the yard manager came urgently.

"This is an emergency!" he cried. "You must help Skarloey and Rusty up the hill." he said.

Sir Handel snorted. "Oh! Do I have to do?" he indignantly asked.

"Yes, you have to." said the yard manager.

"Fine!" Sir Handel sighed and he puffed away.

Sir Handel arrived at the hill and saw Skarloey and Rusty both stood at the bottom.

"Huh!" he scoffed, "Two engines can't even get over a very short hill? Typical!" he huffed rudely.

"No need to be rude." retorted Rusty. "Skarloey is getting old, and you should know that you must respect him. Right?"

"Yes, I know." Sir Handel replied. "But can we just get started already? I ain't sitting here all day."

"Then get ready then." Rusty puffed.

So Sir Handel buffered up to Rusty. "Right, let's start pushing." he said swiftly.

"Okay," Rusty remarked. "Don't rush."

So the two engines began pushing Skarloey up the hill, Skarloey himself also tried moving so he could get up, plus not wanting to leave Rusty and Sir Handel exhausted in the process.

"I must get over this hill, will two engines help?" Skarloey wondered.

"Of course... well maybe." his driver said.

Skarloey, Sir Handel and Rusty were puffing with all their might up the hill.

"I... can... do it!" shouted Skarloey.

"Don't give up!" shouted Rusty.

Sir Handel was already tiring out. "I can't take this any longer!" he wheeshed.

At last, Skarloey was up the hill. "Thank you Sir Handel and Rusty." Skarloey puffed as he raced down the other side.

Rusty was glad that Skarloey was over the hill. "You welcome." he replied.

Suddenly, there was a loud crack! Skarloey's valve gear had burst. Skarloey had tried getting up the hill by using the only strength he had, but it turns out that the mystery of why he couldn't get up the hill was solved.

"Oh my," Rusty gasped. Even Sir Handel felt sorry for Skarloey, he knew that he had been grumpy the whole time and now his friend was in trouble.

"Uh, Skarloey." he puffed meekly.

"Yes, Sir Handel." Skarloey replied.

"Shall I take these workmen to the tunnel for you?" the little blue engine asked, helpfully.

"Well, that would be honourable of you, Sir Handel." Skarloey wheeshed.

"Okay then, Skarloey." Sir Handel puffed and he took the workmen to the tunnel.

Rusty helped Skarloey back to the sheds. Rusty backed Skarloey into his shed, then he turned to change tracks next to him.

"Well done Skarloey!" cheered Rheneas and Rusty. "You tried to show that you're a really useful engine. Even though your valve has snapped." added Rusty.

"Thank you, Rusty." Skarloey replied. "I couldn't have done it without you or Sir Handel."

"But I still don't think you're that bad enough to go on an overhaul." said Rheneas.

Then Sir Handel came back to the sheds, he had delivered the workmen to the tunnel on time.

"There you go, Skarloey." Sir Handel wheeshed. "I've delivered the workmen to the tunnel."

"Oh, thanks Sir Handel." Skarloey said.

Sir Handel felt sad that he had been grumpy all day, now was his time to apologise. "You know, Skarloey." he puffed, "I'm sorry for being so grumpy earlier today." he puffed.

"It's alright." chuffed Skarloey. "At least you helped me over the hill and the workmen are now at their destination."

Then the Thin Controller arrived, he came to talk to Skarloey. "Skarloey, I am very proud of you. You tried your best to get over the hill and you were able to do so."

Skarloey was pleased. "Thank you sir!" he puffed proudly.

The Thin Controller suddenly frowned. "But I also heard that your valve gear had snapped." he said.

"Yes it has sir." Skarloey said.

"And because of all the hard work you have been doing over the years... and because of your valve gear. I am giving you an overhaul" Skarloey's jaw dropped, he gasped from buffer to buffer.

"A-an overhaul?!" he stammered. "W-Why Thank you sir" he wheeshed.

"And now you can take a little break from working and also have your valve gear mended." the Thin Controller added and he walked away.

"I can't believe it." Skarloey gasped. "I'm actually going on an overhaul, I haven't been on one for years."

"Well, you did say about going on an overhaul and here you are." tooted Rusty.

"You'll be gone from the railway for a while." Rheneas added.

"I know," said Skarloey. "I will miss you, but I'm sure there'll be other engines there that I can talk to, which are friendly." he puffed to himself, and everyone agreed.

"Bye, Skarloey!" called Peter Sam.

"Have a great time!" whistled Sir Handel.

"And good luck!" added Rusty.

"I'll sure miss you brother." puffed Rheneas.

"I'll miss you two." said Skarloey.

And it wasn't long before Skarloey was gone into the distance. Skarloey was happy to be going on an overhaul, but he was much more happier to be the leader of the Thin Controller's railway.
