Learning the Past
Two Unusual Railways

The summer of 1980 was difficult for the Small engines. Everyday, they would go from Arlesburgh the the construction site with loads of bricks, lumber, and coaches of workmen; often combining both.

As soon as the new tracks were layed, the stations began to look like they must've done long ago.

All the engines were excited. This would mean more traffic for the railway. And that was good, passengers were delighted to see the old Mid-Sodor Railway being reopened and could hardly wait for the grand opening.

Soon, the construction reached Peel Godred, after passing Kirk Machan.

Rex was waiting at a newly built platform. A four berth shed and some shuting yards were being built near it, and he resting watching the workmen hustle about.

"Hullo," said a voice.

"Uh, what?" Rex was surprised.

"It's me."

"Who are you?"

"I'm Jeffrey, but you can call me Jeff," said a diesel who stood near him. "Who are you?"

"I'm Rex, I'm one of the engines helping build this extension."

"Ah! Then I've heard of you. You small engines made it far, didn't you?"

"Yes, indeed," smiled Rex. "This extension means more passengers. The Mid-Sodor Railway's been closed for almost thirty years now."

"Engines like us always need more work. I understand, the Arlesdale Railway is smaller and needs some 'fresh air'", Jeff replied.

"Exactly, it'll help finacially. We don't want to go bankrupt like this line did."

"That's horrible. That's why it's a priviledge to work on Sodor. Real steam and diesel."

"What are those cables on the top?"

"Oh, those. Those help power us. They are powered by the Electric station here at Peel Godred, not too far down the line. If that fails, we fail, but that happens rarely."

Rex smiled. "With the traffic we'll be getting, you'll be getting more passengers too."

"I'm glad we are. We'll probably get more down at Killdane too. For people who want to travel up here."

"Well, it's time for me to go. But, I'll tell my friends all about you," Rex whistled. "Good bye."

"Good bye."

Rex also met another engines on another railway. But that's another story.
