Based on:

Enid from the Snowdon Mountain Railway

Ernest is a mountain engine on the Culdee Fell Railway. Like most of the other mountain engines, he has his own coach used for passenger services.

Ernest was built at the Swiss Locomotive and Machine Works in Winterthur, Switzerland, in 1900. Soon afterwards, he arrived on Sodor.

When Culdee returned from the works in Switzerland, Ernest and Wilfred informed him about the changes that happened to the railway.

According to Sodor: Reading Between the Lines, he and Wilfred were superseded by the more modern Nos. 6-8 in 1964.

It is implied that Ernest is an old and wise mountain engine.

In Sudrian Stories, Ernest is the engine that all the others look up to. He is always willing to give guidance, and is very patient with the younger engines, but he isn't perfect, and he can get quite annoyed at times. He also seems to have trouble with eyesight, and is said to be farsighted, this was not noticed until he almost accidentally caused Wilfred to derail during the railway's construction. Ernest doesn't often leave the shed, he is often sleeping or complaining about something.

Ernest is based on the Snowdon Mountain Railway's Enid.

Ernest is painted purple with orange lining. The number "2" is painted on the sides and back of his cab in yellow and he has red nameplates, with his name in gold, on the sides of his tanks.

Albeit not seen in the Railway Series, Ernest wears half moon glasses on his front face in Sudrian Stories, but strangely not on his back face.

He is set to appear in the second season of Sudrian Stories.
