Percy's Important Job
A Surprise for Percy
Percy arrived at Vicarstown Coal Mines early in the morning to start work. He had brought The Truck with him which was also carrying workmen.
The trucks awoke to the sunlight, and to the sight of a little green saddle tank engine.
"Is that who I think it is?" asked the leader truck.
"Yes, it's Percy boss," the truck behind him replied.
"Hmmm. Well, seems like we'll have some fun for two weeks. He he he."
The leader truck was the oldest, distinguished by a rusty coupling, red stripe, and smell of bad manners.
"Careful with that red striped truck, Percy," advised The Truck, "devious he is."
"Worry not," Percy comforted, "now, now. This is my house now, and you will do what I say. You will go in your proper sidings, proper trains, and will behave properly. The tables are turning! Move it!" and he bumped them hard.
"Correction," whispered the leader, "this is my house."
Percy had gotten a wash down, so he was determined to stay clean by the end of the day.
However, the trucks were determined to make him dirty by the end of the day.
At noon, he had a break, and his crew went to Crovan's Gate.
"Hullo, Percy. I can see you're clean. Don't know how you managed that," Dodger said.
"Well, these trucks obey me," Percy replied, a bit too puffed up in the smokebox.
"Well, don't let your guard down," Dodger said, slowly.
Percy returned to the Mines, and prepared to take a coal train to Tidmouth.
Somehow, he managed to have the leader in front of him.
He was having a nice journey until Crovan's Gate.
"We won't go, we won't go," the trucks chanted.
"You will, you will," Percy replied.
He braked suddenly, coal fell all over him!
"Ugh!" coughed Percy, "I'm filthy," but he knew he had to carry on.
"Clickety clack. Don't look back. Dirty Percy's on the track!" the trucks sang.
"Shut up!" Percy retorted crossly.
He was embarassed to be seen as he approched Tidmouth.
"Uh, hi, Sir," he said nervously.
"Oh, hullo, Percy," the Fat Controller replied.
"Well, well, well. The poor thing got filthy from smoke box to cab," Gordon chortled.
"A total disgracce to the Fat Controller's railway," added Henry.
"Absolutely disgusting," James finished.
"Now, now. Go and rest, you three, you all have passenger trains later this afternoon," David said.
"You're right," and they were off.
"I do have to say though. I almost thought you would be able to not get dirty, but then again, there's never been a day Dodger has come out of Vicarstown clean," he added.
Percy sighed. He could only agree.
"So, you couldn't make it. I told you," Dodger said to Percy late in the night.
